Through Trap-Neuter-Release (“TNR”), cats are humanely trapped, rabies vaccinated, ear tipped, and spayed or neutered. Healthy adult feral cats will return to their outdoor homes, where their lives are greatly improved without the strains of overpopulation. Stray cats (cats social to humans) and kittens (3 months or under) may be deemed adoptable through Brenham Animal Services (“BAS”) adoption program and may not return to their original property.
Please review the Liability Waiver and the information below. Registration is at the bottom of the page.
Positive benefits of a TNR Program include:
- Improving the cats life;
- Stabilizing colonies by preventing future litters of kittens;
- An immediate reduction in Animal Control calls about behaviors associated with mating, including spraying, caterwauling, fighting, and roaming;
- Resources previously spent on ineffective removal and/or lethal services are spent on non-lethal, lifesaving, positive, publicly-supported initiatives such as subsidized neuter services, adoption, and outreach programs; and
- Positive public reaction, fundraising platforms and partnership opportunities, media exposure, and support from staff, volunteers, other like-minded organizations, and the community at large.
What you need to know:
- Citizens of the City of Brenham can set a live animal trap that is large enough for an adult cat (minimum dimensions are 30-36 inches by 9-10 inches- squirrel traps will not be accepted). Citizens may use their own trap or rent a live animal trap from BAS for a twenty-dollar ($20) fee. The rented trap must be returned to BAS after the TNR Program Event. Traps can only be set by citizens on their own personal or business property within the city limits. Traps will not be permitted on any other property unless written consent is given by the property owner.
- The TNR Program Event will take place on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from October to April. Reservations are required and must be made at least three (3) days prior to the Event date. All reservations must be made through the BAS website at https://cityofbrenham.online/tnr. Each citizen is limited to 2 cats per Event. The reservation form will close when the twenty (20)-cat per Event limit is reached. No reservations can be made after 6:00 p.m. on the Monday before the Event.
- Citizens will be responsible for trapping the cat and transporting it to BAS on the day of the Event. All cats must be dropped off between 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM. Late arrivals will not be accepted.
- Citizens must agree to sign a liability waiver. The TNR Program includes the spay/neuter procedure, a rabies vaccine, and an ear tip. There is no charge associated with the Program, however donations are encouraged.
- Citizens must pick up the cat between 3:00 PM – 5:15 PM on the day of the Event. Any cat left at the facility after 5:00 PM will be released back to their last known location and the trap will become the property of BAS.
-
Any cat that is deemed social to humans may be transferred into the adoption program.
