Brenham Animal Services Launches Trap-Neuter-Release Program to Help Manage Community Cat Population

Brenham Animal Services (BAS) is introducing a new Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) Program designed to humanely manage the local community cat population while improving cat welfare and reducing nuisance behaviors.

Through TNR, cats are humanely trapped, vaccinated for rabies, ear-tipped for identification, and spayed or neutered. Healthy adult feral cats are then returned to their outdoor homes, where they can live healthier lives without contributing to overpopulation. Stray cats that are social with humans and kittens under three months of age may instead be placed into the BAS adoption program.

How the Program Works:

The TNR Program will run from October through April, with events held on the second Wednesday of each month. Participation is limited to City of Brenham residents.

Traps: Residents may use their own trap (minimum 30–36” x 9–10”) or rent one from BAS for $20. Traps must only be set on the participant’s property (or with written consent from the property owner).

Reservations: Required at least three days before the event, and must be made online at https://cityofbrenham.online/tnr Each resident may bring up to two cats per event, with a maximum of 20 cats total.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up: Cats must be dropped off at BAS between 7:30–9:30 a.m. and picked up between 3:00–5:15 p.m. on the same day. Late arrivals will not be accepted.

Program Services: Each cat will receive a spay/neuter procedure, rabies vaccination, and ear-tipping. The program is free of charge, though donations are encouraged.

Adoptable Cats: Any cat deemed social with humans may be transferred into the BAS adoption program.
