The 4.17-acre park has ties to the old Alton Elementary School and Brenham Urban Renewal Agency. Hattie Mae Flowers, a former student of Jerry Wilson and Pickard High School graduate at the age of 15, went to Prairie View for degrees in Elementary Education and Administration, earned in 1932. In 1967 Hattie Mae became the first principal of Alton Elementary and the first Black principal in the Brenham Independent School District. Hattie Mae Flowers and her sister, Marie Flowers, sold the park's land to the Brenham Urban Renewal Agency for $10 in December 1971.

Hattie Mae Flowers Park was dedicated in 1977, and park amenities include picnic areas, a basketball court, a playground, and a Little Free Library.
