The Brenham Police Academy Alumni Association supports the community and the Brenham Police Department by participating in the following organizations and events:
Citizen's Police Academy
The Brenham Citizen's Police Academy is a multi-faceted educational program that allows interested residents to interact with Brenham Police Department officers. The program is designed to introduce community members to the policy and procedures of the department, and to law enforcement in general.
The 10-week class encompasses lectures, tours, demonstrations and "hands on " experiences to increase awareness and understanding on how everyone is a partner in the fight against crime.
Citizens on Patrol
An outgrowth of the CPA program, the Citizens on Patrol (COPS) program is designed to use graduates of the program as the "eyes and ears" of the Brenham Police Department. Graduates draw on their experiences as a member of the academy and are a tremendous community resource. The objective of the COPS program is to utilize volunteers in certain aspects of community policing that combat criminal behavior and assist Brenham officers. Participants patrol neighborhood streets and parks and become an extension of the department, which allows officers to focus on major crime concerns. As of January 2014, COP volunteers have donated over 11,000 hours to the community and the department.
National Night Out
National Night Out is the nation's largest annual crime and drug prevention event, held across the country the first Tuesday of August. However, in 2008, the State of Texas moved National Night Out to October in an attempt to avoid the summer heat.
The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs. It is also aimed at strengthening neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships. It sends a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
In Brenham, the event involves citizens, area law enforcement agencies, emergency response agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials. Along with traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, city residents celebrate National Night Out with block parties, cookouts, visits from police and fire, flashlight walks and contests for youth.

An outgrowth of the Citizens' Police Academy (CPA), the Citizens on Patrol (COP) program allows individuals who have completed the CPA program to patrol neighborhoods and parks in marked COP units. They serve as an extension of the eyes and ears of the police department. COP units are equipped with a two-way radio and are always in contact with Central Communications. The COP volunteers do not enforce the law but do notify dispatch and police officers when violations of the law are observed. Additional duties include traffic control at the request of officers and at special events. For more information on the COP program, contact Corporal Alex Saenz at 979-337-7325.
