Salem Road Widening and Improvement Project

Construction Activities Update on Salem Rd.

With construction activities nearing completion on Salem Rd, the contractor working with BNSF will be performing the last concrete pour near the railroad tracks.  During this time, Salem Rd will be closed to through traffic in order for this final stage to be completed safely.  This will occur today Wednesday, May 12th-Tuesday May 18th.  All local traffic can access homes and businesses from State Highway 36 S but will not be able to cross the railroad tracks.  County residents please plan to use either Industrial Blvd, FM 332, or FM 109 for access into the county.

Original Post - 10-20-2020: The City of Brenham would like to inform all residents and businesses along Salem Rd of construction work that will soon take place. This construction work is part of the Salem Rd Widening and Improvement Project from HWY 36 S slightly past the BNSF railroad tracks. On September 3, 2020, the Brenham City Council approved a $1.28 million dollar contract with Larry Young Paving for these improvements. The scope of work involves taking this portion of the roadway from asphalt to concrete, widening to 39’, storm sewer addition, curb and gutter, and striping. It will also involve making a better transition when exiting or entering Salem Rd from HWY 36 S. The City of Brenham and Washington County have also partnered in this project, in which the County will reimburse the City for additional concrete work on the west side of the tracks. This is a proactive approach for all and can be completed with this project and not affect traffic a second time in the future.

The City of Brenham has communicated with all residents and businesses along this stretch and will continue to communicate with each property owner during the construction process. During the construction phase, we will leave the road open to traffic that has to access homes and businesses daily but will not allow through traffic. It is recommended to use FM 109/FM 3456 as a detour route.

The construction process is expected to start within the next 2 weeks and last for 120-150 days. We are hopeful that construction will end around April 1, 2021. As always, based on weather, this could change.
