Brenham, TX

The Brenham Fire Department was dispatched to US 290 and Old Chappell Hill feeder road for a vehicle fire at 9:20am, and while enroute, informed the vehicle was a bulldozer which was fully involved. Fire crews initiated a fire attack but quickly determined the bulldozer had struck an underground gas line which was feeding the fire. A second alarm was requested. Salem, Meyersville, and Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Departments provided additional manpower and water supply, bringing the total to 28 fire-scene personnel. Interim Fire Chief Roger Williams stated, “Today was a great example of how departments can work together to achieve a common goal.” He continued, “Had it not been for all that responded and assisted in mitigating this incident, the outcomes could have been significantly different. I am very proud and appreciative of everyone on scene today and their great efforts.”

Also on scene providing support were Brenham Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Washington County Emergency Services, Bluebonnet Electric, and the City of Brenham Gas and Utilities Departments.

The City of Brenham Gas department secured the leaking gas line by 10:45 am and the remaining fire was quickly extinguished. The driver of the bulldozer was injured and transported to the hospital for burn injuries and the extent of his condition is unknown at this time. The incident is under investigation by the Texas Railroad Commission.
