City Recommends Winter Weather Preparation Ahead of Upcoming Freezing Temperatures

Update 1-15-2024

Due to weather conditions, residential trash pickup will not be made Monday, January 15, 2024 and there will be a delayed start of pickup on Tuesday.

  • Residential and commercial collection is has been bumped one day this week (Monday's pickup will be on Tuesday, Tuesday's on Wednesday, Wednesday's on Thursday, Thursday's on Friday and Friday's on Saturday). Tuesday commercial and residential pickup anticipates a late start due to weather conditions.

The collection/Transfer station will be closed to the public on Tuesday, January 16. We anticipate a late start on Commercial and Residential solid waste and recycling routes.

The Blue Bell Aquatic Center will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, January 16, starting at 8 am instead of 6 am.

All other City offices will be open with regular hours starting Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Hours modification for Sanitation Collection Transfer Station - Monday, January 15, 2024:

  • Residential Collection on Monday, January 15 may be delayed for cold weather-related safety reasons. Monday pickup should still be placed curbside for collection.
  • The Collection and Transfer Station will be closed to the public on Monday, January 15.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued an appeal for voluntary energy conservation in effect for January 15, 2024, from 6 AM to 10 AM. This state-wide effort is to help alleviate potential strain on the electric grid during this specific timeframe. Residents and businesses are strongly encouraged to participate in energy-saving measures to support the reliability of the electric infrastructure.

Anticipating a drop in temperature and an impending freeze late this weekend and early next week, the City of Brenham is proactively preparing its staff and equipment. Effective today, Wednesday, January 10, 2024, residents with vacant properties can arrange for water shut-off by calling 979-337-7400. These requests must be made by 3PM Friday, January 12. Cut-off fees will be waived for vacant properties until January 17, 2024.

Homeowners are strongly encouraged to take winterizing precautions, which include:

  • Getting acquainted with the water shutoff location.
  • Draining pipes when water is turned off.
  • Insulating pipes and any outdoor water sources.
  • Creating and storing an emergency water supply for washing, drinking, and flushing.
  • Allowing water to drip, not stream, during freezing temperatures.
  • Opening cabinets under sinks to facilitate warm air circulation.
  • Making provisions for outdoor animals.

Commercial property owners are also advised to winterize their backflow devices.
