Rate Increases for City of Brenham Sanitation and Water Customers

The City of Brenham announced today, Monday, August 29, 2022, that the City Council will soon vote on rate increases for both water and sanitation. The proposed rate changes will be presented in September, with the first reading on September 1, 2022, and the second reading on September 15, 2022.

Water Rates

Beginning in October, water rates will increase by 5.5 percent if approved.  This rate increase is necessary because of the significant rise in the cost of supplies, including water treatment chemicals which are a major expenditure in water treatment operations. Fuel prices have also negatively impacted chemical costs.  Elsewhere, supply chain issues and shortages have driven up the cost of water meters, hydrants, pipes, and other materials needed to maintain the water distribution system.

Sanitation Rates

BVR Waste and Recycling notified the City of Brenham about potential rate increases across the board, averaging 13 to 15 percent, relating to both residential and commercial services. These proposed rate increases are due to the following:

  • prolonged fuel prices
  • sharp commodity increases (trucks, carts, and containers)
  • increased operating costs
  • increased landfill tipping fees

When the contract was awarded in 2020, the average diesel price was $2.31, now in 2022, the average diesel price is $4.60.  This will be the first increase proposed since the contract was signed in 2020.

Service will remain the same regarding pick-up day and container size.  All billing and correspondence will remain through the City of Brenham.
