The City of Brenham announced today, Monday, January 16, 2023, that a Special Election will be held, in conjunction with the General Election on May 6, 2023. The recent announcement of Councilmember Atwood Kenjura’s decision to run for Mayor in the 2023 General Election has created a vacancy in his position of Place 3 - Ward 3 Councilmember. The Texas Constitution mandates that when an elected official announces their candidacy for any public office other than the office currently held, the announcement constitutes an automatic resignation of their current office, thereby creating a vacancy. The Texas Constitution also requires that a Special Election to fill the vacancy be called and held within 120 days after a vacancy occurs. In compliance with Article 16, § 17 of the Texas Constitution, Councilmember Kenjura will continue to fulfill the function of his current position until a successor is elected.

Beginning Friday, January 20, 2023, individuals interested in applying for a place on the Special Election ballot for the Place 3-Ward 3 council position may pick up a candidate packet during normal business hours in the City Secretary’s office, at City Hall located at 200 W. Vulcan Street, Suite 204. A packet may also be downloaded on the City’s website at www.cityofbrfenham.org/elections.

The candidate filing period for the Special Election will be 8:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2023, through 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 6, 2023. The qualifications, as set out in the City of Brenham home-rule charter, for all candidates are: (1) must have been a resident of the City and Ward 3 for a period of twelve (12) months prior to the election; (2) be at least 21 years of age, when elected; (3) not be indebted to the City; and (4) shall not have an interest in the profits or emoluments of any contract, job, work or service for the City, and shall not have an interest in selling to the City any supplies, equipment, materials or articles.
