Wastewater Department updating and enforcing Grease Ordinance

The City of Brenham Wastewater Department is in the beginning phase of updating and enforcing the City of Brenham Grease Ordinance. The City is working to address the continuing problem of grease entering the collection system and sewers from improper grease handling and storage practices.

Fats, oil, and grease (FOG) is a leading cause of sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) in Brenham. Grease is a common term for animal fats and vegetable oils. Industrial, commercial, and residential users are often unaware they are causing potential harm by introducing FOG from their cooking processes into their plumbing system and the City’s sanitary sewer system. Over time, FOG builds up, clogs pipes and plumbing, increasing sewer system maintenance costs and presenting potential environmental impacts.  The goal of this project is to reduce the number of sanitary sewer overflows, reduce maintenance costs, and keep our environment clean.

Beginning in August 2024, City staff will conduct inspections to ensure your grease trap is properly intact and check grease levels and pumping schedules.
