City of Brenham Celebrates Community Planning Month with Comprehensive Plan Update and New Public Survey

The City of Brenham recognizes October as Community Planning Month by highlighting the community's progress since adopting its Comprehensive Plan and inviting residents to help shape the City's priorities for the next five years. Adopted in September 2019, the City's Comprehensive Plan, Historic Past, Bold Future: Plan 2040, established a long-term vision for Brenham's growth and development through 2040. The plan was developed with community input and identified 105 Strategic Action Priority items to guide decisions related to housing, economic development, infrastructure, parks, transportation, and quality of life.

Seven years into the plan, the City's Development Services Department is conducting a comprehensive review of these priorities to evaluate progress, recognize accomplishments, and identify areas requiring continued attention. Staff is assessing each action item as Achieved, Achieved/Ongoing, Not Started, or Off-Track, and has found that 58% of those priorities are achieved or in progress.

Measuring Progress Since 2019

Since adopting the plan, Brenham has continued to grow and attract investment throughout the community. Highlights of the City's progress include:

  • Residential Growth: 989 new single-family homes permitted since January 2020.
  • Population Growth: Brenham's population has grown from 17,178 (2020) to 19,957 (2025).
  • Commercial Development: 186 new commercial permits issued from 2020 to present.

These milestones provide a snapshot of Brenham's progress while helping City leaders evaluate how community needs and priorities have evolved.

Your City. Your Voice. Help Shape Brenham's Next Five Years.

Community participation was an important part of developing Plan 2040, including identifying the original Top 8 Strategic Action Priorities. Now, the City is asking residents to revisit those priorities and help determine what matters most moving forward. Beginning October 15, the City will launch "Your City - Your Voice," a public survey inviting residents and community members to identify which remaining Strategic Action items they believe should be the City's Top priorities for the next five to ten years.

As Brenham continues to grow, priorities may change. The survey gives residents an opportunity to share what they believe deserves the City's attention, helping inform future planning discussions, projects, and community investments.

Connect with Us at First Friday

In addition to the online survey, the Development Services Department will host an informational booth during the November and December First Friday events in Downtown Brenham. Visitors can explore informational graphics highlighting the City's progress, share feedback through an interactive community poster, speak with City staff, and complete the "Your City - Your Voice" survey in person using available iPads.

The City encourages residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to participate in the survey and help guide Brenham's next chapter.
